New Scar
April 11th, 2008

Last show of the Australian “One Will Hear The Other” Tour at the Sands Bar in Maroochydore is one I won’t forget in a hurry. Not only was it a good show with lots of musical highlights, jolly japes and fun times (care of The Galvertrons and the Horsell Common lads) but ever since, every time I look in the mirror, I’m reminded of it because of the new scar I have above my left eye which looks like it’s gonna be hanging around for a while. Now I gotta say, this has been a fucking great tour. A bloody hard one at times but really fulfilling on numerous levels. The band’s playing good, the new songs in the set have been fresh and exciting and a real challenge to pull off live (which we like). The crowds have been awesome (too many highlights to list here) and we got to travel around Aussie with 2 bands that are not only really good at what they do but are all awesome people and a whole bunch of fun to hang out with (which is pretty important considering you spend a month and half of your life with them) so it was an absolute pleasure.anyway, back to the last show. We all decided to make it special night since we wouldn’t be seeing each other for a while. At dinner The Galvertrons presented us with personalized T-shirts to wear onstage. mine said “John Fucking Cusack” which I’d been called the whole tour, Karl’s was “You Got Eye Trouble?”, Tom’s was “True Gentleman of rock’roll” and Phil’s had “Bandito” which was my fave.1 idea was to have Manny, the Galvertrons drummer, play ‘My Mind’s Sedate’ so Tom could go to the mixing desk and watch own band play. I’d been getting to do this a few times as I got a wireless system and can just drag my mic stand out into the audience whenever I feel like (which I did quite a few times as it really sounds great coming out of the big speakers out front) but Tom rarely get’s to do this. Anyway, Manny fucking nailed it and was a blast. he’s pretty bloody good. The other idea was that everyone from all 3 bands should get up on stage for the last song and play Home Again together. great idea, but the stage at Sands is a tad small and once everyone was up there wasn’t much room to move which sorta forced various band members into and over the crowd barrier just to be able to play. One of these was Luke, the bass player from Horsell. Luke is a fucking gem of a man and a kick arse bass player who got roped into selling T-shirts at the start of the tour and loading the PA as well as having to play a Horsell set every night (which, if you’ve seen them, is a pretty intense affair) so, as I see it, is totally stand up. So I’m on the mike, singing my guts out with my eyes sorta half closed when I see Luke flying back over the punter barrier, bass out in front of him which, because of his, admittedly, uncontrolled trajectory ends up going straight into my left eye which gives me that ’seeing stars’ feeling but didn’t phase me too much as it didn’t really hurt that bad.But the look on his face was priceless. 1st shock, then terror which made me think something bad had happened and when he’d decided that the best recovery move he could do was to lick my eyebrow I finally saw what he was worried about. He looked like Gene Simmons from Kiss - blood all over his tongue and down his chin. it was then I realized I couldn’t see anything outta my left eye whether it was open or not and it felt like water or a lot of sweat was running down my face. When I looked down I was covered in blood (ruining my new ‘Cusack’ shirt) and there was blood all over the stage. the crowd to love it and it didn’t hurt so I just continued doing what I was doing and everyone seemed to have good time.after the show I looked like I’d been dunked in red paint, Luke was hiding and Dave, our sound guy, was organizing a taxi to get me to the hospital to have stitches. but I wasn’t feeling any pain and Ritchie, out guitar tech and tour manager, found a friend of his that used to be a boxer to have a look at it and after he said it’d be sweet and Johnny Galvertron had put a Butterfly stitch on it all I wanted to do was have a drink with everyone. which is what I did.looking at the scar now, maybe I should have gone and got it stitched up but then again, it was a pretty memorable night and hey, it’s all character building.
